America Reacts to Armstrong Confession

A total of 4.3 million viewers tuned in Thursday, January 18 to watch the first part of Lance Armstrong’s official interview with Oprah, in which he confessed using performance-enhancing drugs to win seven Tour de France titles over a storied cycling career. As Americans watched, many communicated their reaction to Armstrong’s admission on major social media channels, resulting in more than 1.5 million posts on the topic in the days surrounding the much anticipated interview, with 90 percent of posts appearing on Twitter.

Americans Split on Hagel Nomination

President Obama recently nominated Chuck Hagel, former Republican Nebraska Senator, for Secretary of Defense – a decision that has generated criticism among some Members of Congress who are concerned over Hagel’s past comments and Senate votes. Yet, Members are not the only ones voicing their concerns. Americans across the country have taken to social media to insert themselves into what is sure to be a contentious battle for confirmation.

Americans Bracing for Fiscal Cliff

All eyes and ears are on the impending fiscal cliff – and most Americans are concerned we might fall off.
 
With more than 1,153,064 discussions on social media since election day, Americans are voicing their concerns over Congress’s ability to devise a solution before the Bush-era tax cuts expire at year’s end. Among these online conversations, the largest segment (44%) believe the fiscal cliff is a huge problem for the U.S., and 18% of conversations urge the oft-divided Congress to work towards a solution.

During 3rd Debate, Obama Fares Better than Romney Online

With less than two weeks to the 2012 Presidential Election, more than 400,000 social media users took to the internet to discuss their opinions of each candidates’ performance during and immediately following Monday’s final Presidential Debate.
 
Among the almost one-million conversations mentioning the debate, the largest segment, 41 percent, derided Governor Romney’s performance, compared to just 16% of conversations that applauded Romney.
 
President Obama fared better, with 29 percent applauding his performance and only 13 percent deriding the President.

Obama’s Convention Speech Draws Criticism

During and immediately following the Democratic National Convention, there were more than 2.5 million online conversations about the event and its speakers.
 
More than one-quarter (26 percent) of conversations monitored on Twitter, Facebook, forums and blogs were critical of the President’s speech. Still, about 14 percent of conversations suggested that the President and other speakers were inspiring.
 
About 20 percent of the conversations focused on politics, discussing the progressive leaning of the Convention and its speakers.

Muted Pre-Convention Buzz for Democrats

During the week leading up to the Democratic National Convention – also the week that the Republicans held their convention in Tampa – the overall volume of social media conversations around the conventions was relatively low and focused on broad themes.
 
Of the nearly 167,000 conversations on Twitter, Facebook, blogs and forums, 37 percent related to the Republican convention or its speakers (often using common conservative or Republican hashtags).

Post GOP Convention Spotlight Stolen By Eastwood & Ryan

The Republican National Convention saw an emergence of new energy from a party struggling to redefine itself, but failed to meet pre-convention expectations.
 
Overall, 73% of online conversations were negative and only 27% were positive. Condoleezza Rice inspired online audiences and 10% of online mentions said the former Secretary of State was a huge success. Republican presidential hopeful, Mitt Romney, also received high marks with 17% of mentions saying his speech was impactful.

Pundits and political commentary of the 2012 presidential election season seem to highlight the idea that this the most divisive election in history. To get a sense of this sentiment, we looked at how people are perceiving the candidates approach to their campaign's based on the candidate's advertisements. While  a third of online opinion criticize  Obama's ads as negative, 70% say his ads are good or effective and support the way he is attacking Romney's work at Bain Capital and Ryan's proposed medicare plan.

The highly anticipated Republican Veepstakes came to an end this weekend. Presumptive nominee, Mitt Romney, announced that he had chosen seven-term Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan as his running mate. Mr. Ryan is the chairman of the House Budget Committee and the author of budget plans that would reshape government spending and tax policy.

Call for Fewer Guns Restrictions Despite Recent Shootings

With the recent shootings in Wisconsin and Colorado putting the topic of gun control into the public spotlight, conversations advocating for less gun control outnumber the opposing view nearly two to one on social media.

In less than one month, there have been more than 2 million mentions concerning gun control in the United States and a plurality of users believe there should be fewer restrictions on guns (40 percent). In comparison, 15 percent believe further gun control laws should be established to combat the recent mass shootings.

Not all of the conversation has been focused the global athletic competition, however.
